MICROLED VS FLAGSHIP PROJECTION

Flagship cinema display comparison

MicroWall is designed to compete with flagship cinema systems such as the Barco Nerthus and Christie Eclipse G3 – extraordinary projection technologies created for the world's most demanding private cinemas. MicroWall delivers an alternative route to reference-level large-format viewing, using self-emissive MicroLED rather than projection.

*MicroWall price shown is for the 163" 16:9, 0.9 mm configuration. Barco and Christie figures use an indicative US price of approximately $300,000 converted to approximately £225,000 for comparison and should not be presented as current UK retail prices. Projection systems may additionally require a suitable lens, projection screen, installation, cooling and associated infrastructure. Prices and specifications are subject to change.

The MicroLED Difference

The difference between MicroLED and flagship projection goes beyond resolution and brightness. By creating the image directly at the display surface, MicroWall changes the way a cinema can be designed, installed and enjoyed – from true pixel-level blacks and exceptional longevity to eliminating the projector, lens and projection path entirely.

ROOM LIGHTING

Cinema Doesn't Always Have to Mean Darkness

Projection performs at its best when the lighting environment is carefully controlled. The larger the projected image becomes, the more projector output is spread across the screen area, making projector brightness and screen specification important considerations.

MicroLED produces light directly from the display surface. This allows it to maintain a bright, high-contrast image in environments where some daylight or architectural lighting remains present.

For a completely dark, dedicated cinema, the brightness advantage of MicroLED may be less important. For a room expected to function throughout the day, it can become a major factor in the technology decision.

DESIGN FLEXIBILITY

Designing Around the Room

Projection remains exceptionally flexible when very large image sizes are required. The screen itself is comparatively simple, and different aspect ratios and very large canvases can be accommodated without constructing the image surface from electronic display modules.

MicroLED is modular. MicroWall is assembled from precision LED cabinets to create the finished display.

This allows the screen to become an architectural element rather than an object positioned within the room. It can be integrated into joinery, wall finishes and bespoke interior schemes without requiring a projector at the opposite side of the space.

MicroWall configurations are determined by the dimensions of the individual cabinets, so not every arbitrary width and height is possible. The screen is therefore specified around the required aspect ratio, resolution, viewing distance and available wall dimensions.

MICROWALL + AUDIO

Audio Designed for MicroLED

MicroLED requires a different approach to front soundstage design, with audio engineered to work around the display rather than behind it.

Specialist cinema audio manufacturers such as Krix offer systems that position the left, centre and right channels around the MicroWall while maintaining precise dialogue localisation, stereo imaging and an immersive cinematic soundstage. These systems can be visible or fully hidden behind wall surfaces.

MicroLED vs Projection FAQs

Is MicroLED better than a projector for home cinema?

MicroLED can be the better choice when brightness, ambient-light performance, immediate start-up and architectural integration are priorities. Projection remains highly effective for very large images, light-controlled rooms and cinemas requiring speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen. The better solution depends on room design, screen size, audio requirements, viewing preferences and budget.

Does MicroLED need a dark room?

No. One of MicroLED's major advantages is that it can produce a strong image with ambient lighting present. Light control can still improve the overall viewing environment, but complete darkness is not required.

Can speakers go behind a MicroLED screen?

No. MicroLED is a solid electronic display rather than an acoustically transparent surface. Speakers need to be positioned around the screen and incorporated into the acoustic and architectural design.

Can MicroLED replace a home cinema projector?

Yes, provided the required screen dimensions, viewing distance, audio design and budget are appropriate. MicroLED removes the projector and projection screen and replaces them with a direct-view modular display.

How close can you sit to a MicroLED screen?

This depends primarily on pixel pitch, screen resolution and personal viewing preference. Finer pixel pitches allow closer viewing before the pixel structure becomes noticeable.

Can MicroLED display CinemaScope content?

Yes. MicroLED displays can be configured in different dimensions and aspect ratios within the constraints of their modular cabinet system. This makes wider-format displays possible for projects designed around cinematic content.

Does MicroLED require a separate video processor?

Professional MicroLED installations use video processing and control hardware to map incoming content correctly to the LED canvas and manage functions such as scaling, colour, HDR and source handling. MicroWall uses professional NovaStar processing selected for the particular display configuration. The cost of this processor is included in the list prices shown on this website.

Is MircoLED brighter than Projectors

MicroLED generally produces a brighter image at the viewing surface than a comparably sized home cinema projection system, helping preserve image impact and perceived contrast in rooms with ambient light. Projector output is measured in lumens, while direct-view display brightness is measured in nits, so simple one-to-one comparisons can be misleading. MicroWall operates at 600 nits calibrated brightness with up to 1,200 nits peak capability.
