What Is MicroLED?
At first glance, a MicroLED screen may look like an exceptionally large television. The difference lies in the way the display is constructed.
Conventional televisions generally use either an LCD panel illuminated by a backlight or a self-emissive OLED panel. Both technologies can deliver excellent domestic picture quality, but manufacturing, transporting and installing a single display panel becomes increasingly challenging as screen size increases.
MicroLED approaches the problem differently.
Rather than manufacturing one enormous television panel, a large-format MicroLED display is constructed from precision-engineered modular cabinets. LED elements generate light and colour directly at the display surface, without requiring an LCD backlight or separate projection screen. Multiple cabinets are then precisely aligned and calibrated to create one continuous image.
The result is a display with no conventional television bezel between sections and far greater flexibility over its finished dimensions.

What Is CoB MicroLED?

MicroLED vs Mini-LED
The names MicroLED and Mini-LED sound similar, but the technologies work differently.
Mini-LED remains an LCD display technology. A large number of small LEDs sit behind an LCD panel, creating multiple local-dimming zones that can improve brightness and contrast.
MicroLED is direct-view and does not require an LCD layer or separate backlight. The LED display elements create the image directly.
Black Levels and Blooming
High-quality Mini-LED televisions can produce impressive contrast, but each local-dimming zone may control multiple image pixels. Bright objects against very dark backgrounds can therefore reveal some blooming, depending on the display and content.
A direct-view MicroLED display provides much finer control of light across the image, allowing bright and dark picture elements to sit immediately beside one another with greater precision.
Custom Sizing
Mini-LED televisions are manufactured in standard consumer screen sizes. MicroLED can be assembled from modular cabinets and configured around the available wall and the proportions of the interior.

MicroLED vs Projection
For homeowners considering a truly large home cinema screen, one of the most important comparisons is between MicroLED and projection.
Projection remains an excellent technology for creating a very large image, particularly in a dedicated, light-controlled cinema. It also has an important audio advantage: an acoustically transparent projection screen can allow the front loudspeakers to be positioned behind the image.
MicroLED offers a different combination of benefits, particularly where brightness, everyday usability and architectural integration are priorities.
Ambient Light
A projector creates an image using light reflected from a screen. Ambient light reaching that same surface reduces perceived contrast and can make darker scenes appear greyer.
MicroLED generates the image directly at the display surface. This enables much stronger performance in rooms with daylight or artificial ambient lighting.
Strong direct sunlight should still be avoided where possible, as reflections and light falling directly onto any display can influence perceived image quality.
HDR Performance
HDR relies on reproducing bright highlights and dark detail within the same scene.
Projection can create an exceptionally cinematic image in an appropriately controlled room, but a direct-view MicroLED display can achieve substantially higher on-screen brightness and greater highlight intensity.
Maintenance
Modern laser projectors can be extremely reliable and require much less routine maintenance than older lamp-based systems. Projection does, however, depend on a separate projector, optical path and projection surface.

Understanding MicroLED Picture Quality
Resolution is only one element of perceived picture quality. Brightness, contrast, colour accuracy, pixel density, processing, viewing distance and motion performance all contribute to the finished image.
Brightness
Brightness is normally measured in nits. Greater available brightness provides additional headroom for HDR highlights and helps the image retain impact in rooms with ambient light.
MicroWall is specified at 600 nits operating brightness with up to 1,200 nits peak brightness.

16:9 vs Cinematic MicroLED Screens
Most television, streaming interfaces, games and broadcast content use a 16:9 aspect ratio, while many feature films use wider cinematic formats.

Pixel Pitch Explained
Pixel pitch is one of the most important specifications when choosing a MicroLED screen.
It describes the distance between the centres of neighbouring pixels and is measured in millimetres.
MicroWall is available in two nominal pixel-pitch options:
- 0.9 mm — technical pitch 0.9375 mm
- 1.2 mm — technical pitch 1.25 mm
A smaller pixel pitch creates greater pixel density, allowing the display to retain a smoother appearance at closer viewing distances.
0.9 mm Pixel Pitch
MicroWall 0.9 has a minimum recommended viewing distance of approximately 0.9 metres. It is particularly appropriate for:
- Dedicated cinemas with closer seating
- Premium media rooms

- Installations viewed from several positions
- Projects requiring higher pixel density
1.2 mm Pixel Pitch
MicroWall 1.2 has a minimum recommended viewing distance of approximately 1.25 metres and can be an excellent choice for:

- Projects where the additional density of 0.9 mm is unnecessary
The minimum recommended distance describes the point at which the display can be viewed coherently; it is not necessarily the ideal distance for watching a cinema-scale image. Comfortable viewing distance also depends on overall screen dimensions and the desired field of view.
The correct pixel pitch should therefore be selected around screen size and seating distance rather than assuming the smallest pitch is automatically better.
MicroLED Viewing Distance
Viewing distance influences both comfort and perceived detail.
Sitting too close to a very large screen can create an excessively wide field of view even when the individual pixels cannot be distinguished. Sitting too far away reduces immersion and makes it harder to appreciate the available detail.

Can You Watch MicroLED in Daylight?
Yes. Daylight performance is one of the principal reasons homeowners consider MicroLED as an alternative to projection.
A projector relies on reflected light, so ambient light reaching the projection surface reduces perceived contrast. A direct-view MicroLED display generates its own image at the screen surface and provides substantially greater brightness.
This makes MicroLED particularly suitable for:

The display modules are front-serviceable, as are the power supplies and other principal components. This helps reduce the space required behind the installation and makes the system particularly suitable for integrated residential interiors.

Power, Data and Signal Cabling
A professionally integrated installation should contain no visible cabling.
The infrastructure may include:

All large electronic displays generate heat. Appropriate ventilation helps maintain stable operating temperatures and supports long-term system reliability.
MicroWall's actual power consumption varies according to pixel pitch, screen size, brightness and content. Individual 0.9 mm cabinets are specified at approximately 85 W maximum / 29 W average, while 1.2 mm cabinets are approximately 76 W maximum / 26 W average.
The ventilation and electrical strategy should therefore be calculated for the actual cabinet quantity rather than using a generic allowance for every screen.
Integrating Audio with MicroLED
A convincing home cinema depends on sound as much as picture quality.
MicroLED requires a different approach to front soundstage design from an acoustically transparent projection screen.
A projection screen can allow the left, centre and right loudspeakers to sit directly behind the image. MicroLED is a solid electronic display, so the front speakers must instead be engineered to work around it.
Specialist cinema-audio manufacturers offer systems specifically designed for direct-view LED and MicroLED installations. Depending on the room, loudspeakers can be positioned above, below and/or beside the display while careful system design and processing maintain dialogue localisation, stereo imaging and an immersive cinematic soundstage.
The audio layout should therefore be developed alongside the MicroWall dimensions rather than after the screen has been installed.
